Youth Found Dead Following False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation learned how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her child. The message added: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a testimony read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged taken remains attracted social media comments, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest heard that a 19-year-old urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing heard from school personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's family landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they never got that message.
Official Finding
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young child.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed while inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his purpose."
