Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win
The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the decisive points deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the Houston Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
