Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results revealed on this week.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The announcement stated that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, the student claimed that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
